Colorado requires a 30 hour Drivers Ed Class for teens beginning the process under age 15 1/2. The classroom certificate is good for 180 days. Once age 15 two attempts of the Written Test are included in the price of the class. When the written is successfully completed the Permit may be acquired from DMV.

The permit must be held for one full year on the date of issuance.

Within that year the permit holder must log at least 50 hours of driving with the parent, guardian, or responsible adult 21 and over who signed the affidavit of liability and holds a valid CO drivers license. Ten hours of driving time must be at night.

Within that year the permit holder must successfully complete a 6 Hour Behind The Wheel program with a driving instructor. This can be done any time during the year and be divided usually into two or three drive sessions spreading the cost over the year.

At the end of the year the permit holder may take the Road/Driving Test. At successful completion a Graduated Drivers License may be acquired. It is called graduated because it has restrictions in the beginning designed for safety until more experience is acquired.
